LABAN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE:
THE DYNAMIC BODY IN SPACE
October 24-26 2008

How relevant are Rudolf Laban’s ideas today and how are they being developed in the performing arts internationally?
Join us for an exciting three days of inter- and cross-disciplinary dialogue, as part of the celebrations to mark the work and influence of Laban in the 50 years since his death.

Many of the seminal ideas relating to the practice, research and performance of the dynamic body in space derive from the work of Rudolf Laban. His work and ideas have been applied worldwide across a diverse range of fields from dance to behavioral science and many practitioners have used his ideas as a springboard for the development of their work.

The conference presenters will include leading scholars from across the world as well as artists and new researchers. They will address a wide range of areas exploring past, current and potential practice. The conference will feature academic papers, practical workshops, films, lecture demonstrations and performances. The programme of speakers and topics will be published on this website as soon as possible.

The conference plans to include:
    • Performances and Lecture Demonstrations including works by Ana Sanchez-Colberg and Nigel Stewart.
    • A live performance of Rudolf Laban’s 1928 dance work ‘Green Clowns’ re-staged and directed by Alison Curtis-Jones and Valerie Preston-Dunlop
    • A Movement Choir
    • A practical session on the work of William Forsythe, led by former Ballett Frankfurt dancer, Ana Catalina Roman.
    • Papers and lecture demonstrations on current methods of archiving/documentation of the performing arts.
    • Sessions on the development of Laban’s ideas in Education and Community including talks by Michael Platt, Jacqueline Smith-Autard and Gisela Peters-Rohse.
    • Practical and theoretical sessions on the education of the professional dancer, actor and musician.
    • Presentations on choreological methodologies in conservatoire practice by Rosemary Brandt (UK) and Dr Anita Donaldson (Hong Kong)
    • Sessions on movement observation including Karen Bradley (USA) on the non-verbal behaviour of political leaders.
    • Sessions on applications of Laban's ideas in the fields of music, film and architecture.
    • Sessions on Dance and Movement therapy including a workshop with Penelope Best (UK)
    • New research and current practice from Europe, America and Asia.

The conference will offer opportunities for practical involvement via workshops in addition to lectures from leading international scholars. It will also offer opportunities for discussion and networking and to propose collaborative research projects across disciplines.

The conference is open to people from all branches of the performing arts including students. We welcome anyone interested in the past, present and future applications of Rudolf Laban’s ideas.
