MA Scenography [Dance] aims to produce multi-skilled designers who engage passionately with the creation of the whole visual image in performance. Our unique focus on dance will enable you to draw inspiration from visual rather than text-based stimuli: the body in space as revealed by light.
You will be encouraged to establish a creative dialogue with the choreographer from the earliest stages of each practical project, creating work where design is integral rather than purely decorative. Each project throughout the programme is supported by lectures and seminars in areas of related theory, enabling you to critically reflect upon your own practice and that of other designers.
No other programme in the world provides such an opportunity to place scenography at the heart of dance creation. Our students come from many and varied disciplines including dance, choreography, architecture, sculpture, fine art and theatre design. Our programme contributes to a thriving community of emerging practitioners at Laban, and ensures the development of highly original and vibrant dance performance.
Full time: 11 months
Part time: 22 months
Validated by City University London
Design for the body, spatial design and lighting design are explored through separate strands in the taught part of the programme. You will then bring these areas together in four practical scenographic projects, which are undertaken throughout the year. You will be responsible for structuring a personal brief for each project thus ensuring a learning experience over which you have some control. The different modules within the programme structure encompass a broad spectrum of themes relating to contemporary dance design.
Please note that technical training (technique classes) is not provided within the fee structure of the programme. However, classes are available on payment of a supplementary fee to cover direct teaching costs – please see further information Technique Training.
Alternatively evening classes offered by the Education and Community department are available.
A range of professional classes are also offered at our partner organisation Greenwich Dance, located some 15 minutes walk away.

To complete the programme, you will also undertake an in-depth independent research project (M505 Project). This may take the form of a publicly presented major dance work or works, an installation, a collaborative piece and so on which represents your own distinctive practice as it has developed on the programme.
• To develop reflective practitioners who are equipped with a rigorous critical awareness of dance design and the reciprocity of theory and practice, thereby promoting standards of excellence in dance scenography, and preparing the student for employment.
• To explore and reflect upon the potential of design for dance, taking account of the social, cultural, aesthetic and political contexts in which the performance practice is located.
• To develop and promote scenographic methodologies as approaches to understanding, communicating and collaborating in dance and design practice.
• To foreground the non-verbal aspects of the arts, placing design at the centre of an interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary activity.
• To be at the forefront of international design for dance, developing a new and vital role for the designer, using traditional and new technologies.
Assessment is by four practical assignments incorporating supporting visual and written documentation. In addition to completing the taught course, you will be required to complete a self-selected practice-based scenographic portfolio project, equivalent to 20,000 words.
Applicants should normally have a good first degree or have five years' professional experience.
Applications are also invited from people with:
