Pilates Bridging Programme


The programme will enable qualified Pilates mat work teachers to convert their mat work qualification in to a full Studio qualification in all aspects of Pilates including the use of a comprehensive range of equipment. The programme at Laban will be particularly attractive to those who wish to gain competence in working with dancers.
The programme will be structured on a linear basis with students able to enter the programme at designated points (normally every 18 months).
The programme is accredited by the PILATES foundation® UK Ltd. It is the only not-for-profit professional Pilates organisation in the UK dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of certification training, continuing education and code of conduct. It aims to uphold the highest standards of teaching to ensure that the public has access to quality training, and to establish a common standard for Pilates teacher training in the United Kingdom and Europe. Student membership will be compulsory and an additional fee will be incurred for membership and examination.

The first six months will consist of a minimum of 400 hours of practical and theoretical training including lectures and autonomous learning.
This will be followed by six months (minimum of 400 hours) of supervised teaching practise, case studies, essay and revision.
Programme units which have been designed and set by Laban and subject to approval by PILATES foundation® UK Ltd include:
The use of Pilates equipment and repertoire such as Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda-chair, Ladder Barrel, spine correctors and half barrels, Swiss balls and auxiliary small equipment and methods of adaptation in response to the rehabilitation of injuries or musculo-skeletal imbalances
Anatomy and Physiology
Methods of rehabilitating injury in dancers
Ante and post natal exercise
Working with the young and the elderly
Knowledge of the professional disciplines of referral and screening.
Learning and teaching methodologies
Business and studio management skills
Trainees are also expected to spend time each week engaged in independent research/studio time.
During the first six months a typical week might look like this:
Practical lecture (5 hours weekly for 22 weeks)
One taught class per week in the studio of (machine-based) exercise (1.5 hours weekly)
Three sessions per week self study (4.5 hours weekly)
Daily observation of studio exercise (Approx 4.5 hours weekly)
Human anatomy and physiology revision (2 hours weekly for 12 weeks)
Tutorial or Seminar on motor learning and somatic patterning (1.5 hours weekly for 10 weeks)
Self reflection and work on port-folio (2 hours for 22 weeks)
Approximately 20 hours weekly
Additional training requirements may include:
Participation in workshops arranged by recognised Pilates organisations
Participation in dance health conferences where possible
Other training options of relevance as and when they occur
Aims of the Programme
To train proficient and safe Pilates teachers in the Pilates method
To increase training and career opportunities for existing mat work teachers
To ensure the provision of appropriately trained teachers in the Pilates method for the dance profession
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the Programme, graduating trainees will have:
Thorough knowledge of Studio Pilates repertoire of exercises including variations and applications for special needs
A sound knowledge of the anatomy of the body and the ability to select, through postural and movement analysis, suitable exercise to enable an individual to re-align and balance their body, including rehabilitation of injuries
An ability to teach (including demonstrate) effectively the exercises to clients of varying ages and capabilities
Competence in the use of the Pilates Method to enhance the training of dancers and to support dance artists in maintaining effective use of their body in their practice
An understanding of the basic principles of other professional disciplines such as Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, the Alexander technique, Feldenkrais and other complimentary approaches to health and fitness
An ability to communicate clearly and to teach with evidence of understanding of a client’s learning process and development.
An understanding of ante and post natal exercise within a studio environment
Units of the Programme
1. The use of Pilates equipment and repertoire

(i) Continuous assessment: tutorials, case-studies, personal log book of classes, observations, self-assessment, theory examination, practical teaching examination, two written case studies and an essay.
(ii) Examination: Part1; Part 2
The examining body will be PILATES foundation® UK Limited.
An Assessment Panel consisting of approved members of PILATES foundation® UK Limited will be responsible for setting the final examination.

(a) Self-assessment
(b) Two full case histories
(c) One essay
(2) A written examination: 3 hour paper
Part 2
Practical Teaching Assessment:
A 30 minutes studio session (group teaching) and a 60 minutes private session (individual tuition) taught by the student.
Certification
Certification is awarded by the PILATES foundation® UK Limited.
Successful completion of a one year (minimum) mat work training accredited by the Pilates Foundation. Non Pilates Foundation applicants, accredited by Moira Stott, Polestar or Body Control, might be considered after successful completion of a Pilates Foundation mat work theory exam and a separate teaching exam.
Minimum of eight months mat work teaching experience prior to application
Minimum of 25 Studio sessions taken prior to commencement of the programme
Current first aid certificate
Sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology
Evidence at interview of a serious commitment to study in the Pilates method leading to practise and a positive attitude to the opportunities and demands of the training offered on the Programme.
Prior knowledge or training in dance are desirable but not essential.
Normally the maximum number of trainees on the programme is six.

Laban Pilates Studio: one of the largest in UK offering a comprehensive range of equipment including reformers, cadillacs, wunda-chairs, ladder barrel, spine correctors and half barrels, Swiss balls and auxiliary small equipment.
Dance Science Laboratory: The laboratory houses state-of-the-art testing equipment to enable dance science researchers to investigate the physiological, biomechanical and psychological aspects of dance within a scientific framework. The Laboratory facilitates research in fitness and health issues in dance training and operates a screening programme of Laban students. Pilates teacher trainees will be asked to assist in the screening programme .
Injury Clinic: Currently offers in-house physiotherapy and remedial massage and operates an injury prevention policy. Students have access to the clinic via a booking/ charging system.
Laban Library: The library provides an essential resource for staff and students. It contains specialist Pilates books, videos and DVDs plus dance books, journals, conference papers, theses, archive materials, videos and CDs.
The majority of this programme will be delivered by Jessica Moolenaar, the Co-ordinator of the Pilates Teacher Training Programmes. Jessica was trained by Alan Herdman and is a member of the PILATES foundation® UK Limited. She completed a BA in Dance Education at the Theatre school in Amsterdam and is currently completing an MSc in Complementary Health, Bodywork, at the University of Westminster in London. Specialist members of the faculty will be responsible for the delivery of specific core components of this programme: Katherine Watkins BSc (Hons) MCSP SRP, Co-ordinator of the Injury Clinic at Laban, will deliver four three hour lectures relating to Postural Assessment, Referral and Screening, Liaison with professional practitioners, and Injuries and Conditions requiring Remedial Exercise. Esther White BA (Hons) LSSM Dip and PILATES foundation qualified teacher will be delivering a 12 week revision programme (2 hours a week) in Anatomy and Physiology. Giselle Zampetis, a PILATES foundation qualified teacher will be delivering a six week programme on the Wunda chair. Qualified visiting lecturers will be engaged in specialist areas such as Pre and Post natal Pilates and working with the Young, Elderly and Dancers.
