Transitions Dance Company brings together the worlds most exciting choreographers with exceptional young dancers. The Company is respected for the consistent quality of its choreography, production and performers. By commissioning new work from outstanding choreographers and recruiting dancers emerging onto the international dance scene, Transitions Dance Company continues to contribute to the explosive field of contemporary dance.
Transitions Dance Company tours every year from March - July to national and international venues. For two decades the Company has entertained and delighted audiences from Aberdeen to Austria, Jersey to Japan and Manchester to Malaysia with a programme of short dance pieces, and 2008 will be no exception.
Transitions Dance Company is supported artistically and administratively by Laban, one of Europe's leading institutions for dance artist training. The Company is based at Laban's new lottery-funded building at Deptford Creekside, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the architects behind Tate Modern.
Transitions Dance Company was founded in 1982 by Bonnie Bird (1914-1995) who was Artistic Director until her death in 1995. Bonnie Bird was one of the original members of the Martha Graham Dance Company and became the first official teacher of Martha Grahams technique - her pupils included Merce Cunningham. The Bonnie Bird Choreography Fund was established in 1984 to support and promote innovative choreographers in Britain, Europe and America.
Members of Transitions Dance Company have gone on to work with companies such as: Adventures in Motion Pictures, New Adventures, Akram Khan Company, Alias Campagnie, Siobhan Davies Dance Company, DV8, Rambert Dance Company, Random Dance Company, The Cholmondeleys and The Featherstonehaughs.
