Costume

"In collaboration with Daniel Larrieu, I developed a series of costume designs; the concept for which was to transform the dancers from being dressed entirely in black (with the exception a vital, single, chequered, Burlington sock), to being dressed entirely in white. In the midst of these two opposite states, there was to be a mixed scheme of black and white.
Drawing upon research sources which informed Daniel’s process, I incorporated into the designs, motifs inspired by the works of Oskar Schlemmer, Merce Cunningham, and Richard Serra. The simple geometric shapes of the circle and the rectangle were adopted, manifest as cut-in sections and appliquéd surface designs. As a contrast to the simplicity of a black and white scheme, there is complexity in the selection of fabrics used – in terms of surface qualities and weights.
The development from black to white is one which Daniel and I worked closely with the dancers to achieve. The costume changes are executed with precision – sometimes intentionally seen, as part of the action, sometimes taking place in a manner which is disguised; both methods advancing the overall scenographic transformation."
